Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington
HISTORY

1916 Under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Hamilton, they begin to provide a community service of matching an adult man with a young boy who is in trouble with the law.

1921 The Big Brother Association of Hamilton and District begins to operate separately from the Rotary Club of Hamilton.

1927 The first staff person is hired by the Big Brother Association of Hamilton and District.

1964 Big Brothers of Canada was founded by nine Southern Ontario agencies and one from British Columbia. Hamilton was one of the charter members of Big Brothers of Canada.

1965 Hamilton and District office opened its Burlington office at 2010 Maria Street.

1967 Big Brothers of Hamilton and District hired its first female employee as a social worker.

1981 Purchased the property at 639 Main Street East for $90,000.

1983 The construction of the new building commenced for $405,000.

1984 The Burlington office was moved to the Rotary Centre on Guelph Line.

1986 The mortgage was paid off, mainly through bowling and bingo revenues.

1987 Big Brothers of Hamilton and District became a member of Big Brothers of Ontario.

1994 In-School Mentoring was introduced.

2003 The Big Brother Association becomes Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington.
