SOAR stands for Social Opportunities Activities and Relationships. This group-based program was created specifically for children who are waiting to be matched with a mentor.

SOAR members participate in social, educational and recreational activities in a positive, group mentoring atmosphere. Group activities include: recreation and sports, games and crafts, special events, personal development, nature and the environment, volunteer and community work and employment preparation.

Time Commitment

As a SOAR volunteer, you will accompany children on a ratio of 2:1 to a pre-determined group activity for two hours once a week.

The program strives to do the following

Children can wait up to two years before they are matched with their Big Brother, Sister, Couple or Family. SOAR was created to help these children enjoy educational and recreational activities as they wait for the special Big Brother or Big Sister.

SOAR provides a safe, healthy, nurturing empowering environment in which children can participate in a variety of learning activities.

Some of SOAR’s recent activities have included:

  • bonfires
  • hiking
  • bowling
  • board games
  • cooking classes
  • attending sports games
  • indoor and outdoor sports
  • wetland biodiversity and pond exploration
  • canoeing and wildlife spotting
