Back to School Safety Helmet Giveaway

On August 25th, children of our community joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington alongside their parents, guardians, Big Brothers or Big Sisters for a safety helmet giveaway.

As children are getting ready to go back to school, we wanted to make sure that bike safety was a priority. All children in attendance received a free safety helmet.

Hosted and sponsored by Malhotra, Stayshyn and Wilson Law Firm, and in partnership with the City of Hamilton’s Public Health Services, this safety initiative was a big success.

Eighty children received new safety helmets which were fitted by Public Health Services on site. Attendees had a choice between blue, pink or green helmets.

Education and awareness were main focuses of the event. While wearing a safety helmet is a very important (and legally required) practice – wearing it properly is of equal importance. Among the helmet giveaway and barbeque, demonstrations on wearing techniques and injury prevention were given. The City of Hamilton’s Public Health Services brought a replica of the human brain for the children in attendance to see/touch. Made of gelatin, the purpose of the demonstration was to show children how fragile their brain is, thus the importance of wearing a safety helmet.

Before the festivities ended, two new bikes were raffled off. To view the complete album of the event, please visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.499329963428146.126919.114072371953909&type=1&l=95754bc650
