A long-time mentor tells his story

September 2012 - "The decision to become a Big Brother was not an unusual one for me as my cousin who was nine months older than me was one for a time. Caring for children was a big thing in our family as my parents were foster parents for nearly fifteen years while I was growing up seeing around eighty babies, toddlers and the odd early school age child living with us. What I never counted on was how close I would become to my last of three Little Brothers. Michael who is now 32 years old as I like to say…he stuck…kind of like throwing spaghetti to the ceiling to see if it is done.

When you choose to take a path in life, even in your volunteer life, you never really know how it is going to turn out. One has the opportunity to make the experience as rewarding as it can be for the one you are in service to while never thinking that you too can expect anything in return…..but guess what! It can change your life. The experiences I have shared with Michael, the things he has taught me over the years, the laughs and even the challenges have woven a tapestry of great memories that I am so glad to have been a part……. I got as much as I gave."
